Quita’s favourite Bull Terrier was the brindle and white Kearby Kihikihi (Bronx); all the respected members of the fraternity of the time (1954) agreed that had he continued his show career he would have been a champion (it was cut short by an impacted abscess in his jaw which took months to heal).
Unfortunately her ambition for a brindle champion male eluded her during her lifetime.
Her latter preoccupation was ring craft and Quita urged the owners of promising
youngsters to pay better attention to their handling skills.
Sometimes opening a door has a profound affect on the rest of your life!
“In 1951 my mother, with Brendan Best Bonnet in tow (bred by Granny Adlam), opened the door to a Harrogate Pet Shop; she started a conversation with Quita Youatt of Kearby fame which lead to a lifetime association.
In 2002 Sarah and Bob opened the door to Foston village hall and sat alongside Quita
and I at the Harvest Super. Already in the market for a puppy, within days they had
viewed Kearby Gin Sling's litter and settled on Kearby's Liqueur.
I have had a
share in the Kearby prefix for twenty years but livestock farming severely restricts
other activities, so I am delighted that Sarah and Bob have agreed to carry on the
Kearby mantle.
This breed needs careful, committed breeders whose first consideration is the welfare of the puppies produced.’’
I have been Secretary of both the Bull Terrier Club and the Miniature Bull Terrier
Club and also Editor of the Coloured Club Bulletin. A member of most regional clubs,
a Ch. Show Judge and Steward, I also produce articles for the dog press and bull
terrier publications.
I have a particular interest and fondness for the oldies, they
are magic.

Dogs have been a part of our life for as long as we can remember having been brought
up with Collies and Retrievers, and owned Labradors and latterly Jack Russells. Cutlet,
however, was entirely different: a pure white Bull Terrier dog. He was a big chap
and beautifully behaved (although prone to the usual BT lapses) and was the initial
spark that ignited an interest in the breed.
That was in the 1980’s however and it
took some twenty years, and a chance meeting with Quita and Liz, to complete the
circle.
